Without Borders: using photography to document the global face of cancer (#14)

Carolyn Taylor 1
  1. Global Focus on Cancer, South Salem, NY, United States

In 2010, after winning a British Airways contest, photographer and ovarian/endometrial cancer survivor Carolyn Taylor began a photo documentary project in an effort to show that the battle against cancer is universal. She logged more than 100,000 miles visiting 14 countries, photographing and interviewing cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and medical professionals in an effort to show that regardless of race, religion, nationality or economic status, cancer has no borders. In this presentation, we will meet the people and places behind the images, their hopes, strength, determination and pain, in their struggles and successes in the face of a cancer diagnosis. We will hear how, inspired by the people she met and the lack of awareness, education and support many of us in high-resource settings take for granted, Carolyn founded Global Focus on Cancer an NGO that acts as an agent of simple and effective change to help reduce the global burden of cancer. She will share how she views her cancer diagnosis as an opportunity, a catalyst for change, an empowering force in her life, and a means of connecting people and resources for the greater good.
