‘Get good sleep’ is often advice given in the context of managing chronic health conditions, stressful situations, or just broadly improving quality of life. This advice is supported by a range of research which shows associations between poor sleep and adverse mental and physical health outcomes. But what does ‘good sleep’ actually mean, and is it so easy to ‘get’? This presentation will provide an overview of some of the barriers individuals often experience to achieving good sleep, including sociodemographic, environmental, occupational and medical challenges to achieving a ‘good sleep’. Indeed, rather than being something everything in the population can access, this presentation will highlight that a good sleep is often a privileged experience, influenced by a diverse range of factors across individual, family, social, occupational, cultural and political levels.
